The dependence of grain orientation on stress-induced martensitic transformation in superelastic, polycrystalline Nickel-Titanium sheet

چکیده
The dependence of grain orientation on stress-induced martensitic transformation in superelastic, polycrystalline Nickel-Titanium sheet was examined at the microstructural length scale. Full-field strains, indicative of transformation extent, were characterized in fields of view of nominally 100 μm x 100 μm using a custom combination of scanning electron microscopy with distortioncorrected digital image correlation. It was found that similarly oriented grains do not necessarily transform similarly, in contrast to a common assumption in mean-field theories. Specifically, grains with similar orientation (as determined by the misorientation of the grain and specimen axes) showed variation in both the mean strain of the grain as well as the range (heterogeneity) of strain across the grain, as determined from surface measurements. Additionally, neither grain size nor degree of misorientation (of common crystal axes from the loading axis) affected the mean strain and strain range.

The superelastic effect in shape memory alloys (SMAs) is attributed to the stressinduced reversible austenitic-martensitic phase transformations. It is characterized by the development of significant strains which are fully recoverable upon unloading, and also characterized by the stress-hysteresis in the loading and unloading cycle which corresponds to the energy dissipated during phase transf...

This article presents a study of fatigue-crack propagation behavior in Nitinol, a 50Ni-50Ti (at. pct) superelastic/shape-memory alloy, with particular emphasis on the effect of the stress-induced martensitic transformation on crack-growth resistance. Specifically, fatigue-crack growth was characterized in stable austenite (at 120 8C), superelastic austenite (at 37 8C), and martensite (at 265 8C...

Superelastic NiTi (51.0 at.% Ni) specimens reinforced with 0, 10 and 20 vol.% TiC particles were deformed under uniaxial compression while neutron diffraction spectra were collected. The experiments yielded in-situ measurements of the thermoelastic stress-induced transformation. The evolution of austenite/martensite phase fractions and of elastic strains in the reinforcing TiC particles and the...
